Apprehensive Patient

The Apprehensive Patient:
Sedation Dental Services for Anxiety in Launceston

Do you feel nervous whenever you pass a dental office? Do your hands get clammy at the thought of seeing the dentist or getting a check-up? Does a prior bad experience at the dentist prevent you from seeing a dentist? You could be afflicted with dental anxiety, and, at Pickup Bagshaw Dental in Launceston, we have solutions that could help you get through your treatment feeling calm and relaxed.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

There are two chief purposes for sedation dentistry: to ease anxiety and to prepare patients for longer treatments or procedures. Sedation dentistry also takes a few forms, from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to general anesthesia, which renders the patient unconscious (but must be performed in a hospital setting). Right here at Pickup Bagshaw Dental, we offer nitrous oxide and IV sedation for certain procedures. Your comfort is our top priority, and we’ll be happy to sit down with you to discuss your options. Whether you’re too nervous to sit in the dental chair, or have been putting off an extensive treatment, we have sedation dentistry to help get you through.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) is a gas that’s inhaled through the nose. A mask is placed over the nose and left there for the duration of the treatment. Patients can breathe easily and feel a relaxed sense of “euphoria” alleviating their anxieties.

Patients like nitrous oxide as well because it wears off more quickly after the mask has been removed when compared to other methods of sedation. There’s also little to no side effects, although if you eat prior to your treatment, there is a chance that the nitrous oxide could make you feel nauseous.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered intravenously through a vein in the arm and involves a combination of certain chemicals. You are not rendered unconscious, but instead move into a sort of “twilight sleep” where you can communicate with the dentist during your procedure, but will have no memory of the treatment. This is typically reserved for patients who are undergoing a lengthy procedure or who have a deep fear of the dentist and don’t want to remember their treatment.

Not everyone may qualify for IV sedation, as it depends on the length of your procedure or the extent of your dental fear. Most surgical procedures will still use local anesthesia as well, numbing that area of your mouth before moving forward with the treatment.
