There are two chief purposes for sedation dentistry: to ease anxiety and to prepare patients for longer treatments or procedures.
Sedation dentistry also takes a few forms, from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to general anaesthesia, which renders the patient unconscious (but must be performed in a hospital setting). Right here at Pickup Bagshaw Dental, we offer nitrous oxide and IV sedation for certain procedures.

IV Sedation
IV sedation is administered intravenously through a vein in the arm and involves a combination of certain chemicals. You are not rendered unconscious, but instead move into a sort of “twilight sleep” where you can communicate with the dentist during your procedure, but will have no memory of the treatment. This is typically reserved for patients who are undergoing a lengthy procedure or who have a deep fear of the dentist and don’t want to remember their treatment.
Not everyone may qualify for IV sedation, as it depends on the length of your procedure or the extent of your dental fear. Most surgical procedures will still use local anaesthesia as well, numbing that area of your mouth before moving forward with the treatment.
