About Root Canal/Endodontics

Root canal treatment for infected teeth

First, let’s take a look at the layers of the tooth. By understanding these layers, our patients can understand the extent of the damage to their tooth, if any.

  • Enamel – This top-most layer is the white substance that encapsulates the whole tooth. It’s also the first layer of defense, but is susceptible to wear and tear.
  • Dentine – This hard, mineralised layer is the thickest layer and protects the sensitive core of the tooth: the pulp.
  • Pulp – This is where sensitive nerve endings and blood vessels reside. If decay or trauma reaches this point, it can cause pain, a shocking sensation, and more.
  • Cementum – This substance is what secures the tooth to the jaw. I’s possible for the tooth to become dislodged as a result of decay or physical trauma.
Crucial role of fillings

How Root Fillings Work

Root fillings, also known as root canals, are done when the trauma has reached the deeper layers of the tooth, but the tooth itself is still salvageable.

Dr Pickup, Dr Bagshaw or Dr Thomas will scrape out the debris from trauma or the diseased tissues from the tooth and fill the canal with a tooth-coloured composite substance. This material will prevent further damage from tooth decay, and fill in the trauma from physical injuries.

Root canal treatment can avoid extraction when a tooth has become badly infected through decay or other damage.

It entails:

  • Removal of diseased tissue from dental pulp in the canal within a tooth root.
  • Cleaning, filling and sealing the area.
  • Placing a dental crown to restore the tooth to full function.

Modern dental anaesthesia and advanced dentistry techniques minimise any discomfort during the root canal procedure.

With proper care, teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.

When you might need root canal treatment

Root canal treatment becomes necessary after dental pulp has become infected and inflamed. This can be caused by problems such as:

  • Deep decay
  • A chip or crack in the tooth
  • Physical injury
  • Weakening of a tooth through repeated dental work

Symptoms you might need root canal treatment include:

  • Moderate or severe pain
  • Sore, swollen gums
  • Sensation of heat in your gums
  • Gums darkening in colour – because of decay
  • Tooth discolouration – a sign the nerve is dying
  • Oversensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks

In some cases, there may be no apparent signs that you need root canal treatment.

Benefits of root canal treatment

Some helpful info about endodontics

Root canal treatment is a virtually painless procedure that ends the misery of toothache while preventing tooth loss. It allows you to eat the foods you enjoy, and lets you smile with confidence.

It also eliminates the bacteria that caused the decay and inflammation. This prevents infection spreading to surrounding teeth and other areas of your body.

Root canal treatment costs

Root canal treatment is generally less expensive than the alternative of tooth extraction and replacement with a dental implant.

Root canal cost depends on factors such as:

  • Complexity of the procedure.
  • Level of infection.
  • Position of the tooth cavity.
  • Number of tooth roots – some teeth have just one root while others have two or three.
  • Whether you need more than one appointment.
