About Gum Disease

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease – periodontal disease or periodontitis – occurs when a build-up of plaque on teeth infects the gums.

Plaque is the sticky coating that forms on teeth and it contains bacteria that irritate the gums. When the immune system responds to this infection, it releases substances that inflame the gums.

This inflammation is known as gingivitis. Left untreated, it can become periodontitis – full-blown gum disease.

Initial treatment for gum disease entails minimally invasive deep cleaning – scaling and root planing. If the condition worsens, surgery may be needed.

With gum surgery, we can eliminate the diseased tissues and clean up the area to give your gums a better chance at recovering. Healthy gums help healthy teeth stay strong and secure.

If you’re unsure about the state of your gum health, schedule a consultation with Dr Pickup, Dr Bagshaw or Dr. Thomas to have your oral health evaluated for possible signs of the disease.

Risk factors for gum disease

What are the symptoms and associated risks?

Factors that increase the risk of gum disease include:

  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Genetic susceptibility.
  • Poor diet.
  • The ageing process.
  • Some medical conditions.
  • Smoking
  • Stress

Symptoms of gum disease

You may be unaware you have periodontal disease during the early stages – one reason why regular dental check-ups are important.

When symptoms do become apparent, they may include:

  • Constant bad breath
  • Mouth sores
  • A change in how your bite works
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Loose teeth
  • Bleeding gums
  • Receding gums

Gum disease complications

Periodontitis can cause several major health issues as inflammation spreads from your mouth via the bloodstream to other areas of your body, including vital organs.

This can result in complications such as:

  • Gum disease can affect blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of diabetes or making it more difficult to control the condition
  • A 2019 study suggested that gum disease doubles the risk of stroke because of changes in blood and oxygen flow to the brain
  • Heart disease. Inflammation from the gums can result in narrowing of arteries and blood clots
  • Lung infections. Bacteria travelling from the mouth to the lungs can lead to infections such as pneumonia
Is it preventable?

Can you prevent gum disease?

Gum disease is a common problem and a major cause of tooth loss, although in many cases it’s preventable with good oral hygiene backed by preventive dentistry.
  • Maintain a regular routine of brushing and flossing.
  • Avoid or cut back on sugary drinks and foods.
  • Get regular dental check-ups and professional dental cleanings.
