When do you need to seek emergency dental assistance?

Here are a few suggestions and general guidelines on how you may want to handle common dental injuries and discomforts, and to assess whether you may require emergency dental services.

Severe toothache

If you have a sudden and severe toothache, call our emergency dentist right away. Some discomfort and pain may be okay, and could wait till the next day, but if the toothache is intense, you must try and get to the clinic as soon as possible.

Things to look out for:

  • Pain with hot and cold foods
  • Pain that is keeping you up at night
  • A dull ache that doesn’t go away
  • Any facial swelling

Broken tooth

If your tooth has been broken, chipped, cracked in an accident or contact injury, you will need to get to the emergency dentist quickly. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. A cold compress to the face may help with the pain.

Knocked-out tooth

Trauma caused by accidents or sport injuries can knock your tooth out. If this happens, don’t panic. Find the tooth if possible, hold it by the crown and clean it gently to get rid of the dirt. Put the tooth back in your socket and get to our Launceston emergency dentist as quickly as possible. Sometimes it may not be possible for you to put the tooth back in the socket. In this case, just hold it under your tongue till you get to the dentist.

Tongue or lip got bitten

If you have accidentally bitten into your tongue or lip and it is bleeding, first clean the area with a wet cloth. Apply a cold compress to reduce the swelling. If the bleeding is excessive or does not subside after some time, then call our emergency dentist and come in to see us as early as possible.

Broken crowns

If your dental crown has broken off, you need to get to a dentist quickly. The crown is placed on the top of the tooth not only for appearance, but to protect the underlying tooth structure as well. A broken crown will leave the tooth exposed and vulnerable to infection. Make sure you bring in the crown with you as we can sometimes recement it.
