Dental Implants & Other Cosmetic Dentistry Options in Launceston, TAS

If you're missing one or more teeth in Launceston, it may be affecting you more than you realize. Some patients have told us that they were afraid to be in public or even leave their homes. There's a stigma that exists, where persons with missing teeth are assumed to be unhealthy or unattractive. The best course of action is to fill that gap in your smile with a tooth replacement treatment. While dentures and dental bridges are one option, we recommend dental implants as a more permanent and durable choice.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are man-made dental fixtures constructed from titanium and a porcelain crown restoration. They consist of three pieces: the implant screw or fixture, the abutment, and the porcelain crown.

The titanium fixture is placed in the jawbone first and left to heal for a few months. During this stage, the beginnings of osseointegration take place, which seals the dental implants in place, just like a real tooth would be. After months of healing, the abutment is then placed and the porcelain crown soon after to complete the look. Some patients may scoff at the timeline that takes place, but many have claimed the security of the implant was well worth the wait.

Dental Implants vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options

The most appealing part of dental implants is the fact that they are permanently placed directly into the jawbone. Most others, such as dentures or dental bridges, merely cover the gap in your smile. Though they are quicker in terms of treatment time, they do little to repair the jawbone underneath.

Dentures may be used by patients who have multiple missing teeth, but dentures may not share the same lifespan as a dental implant. They are also prone to natural wear and tear, and as a result, become ill-fitting over time.

Dental bridges are another treatment that patients may often get, and they cover the gap in your smile by bridging dental crowns together and clipping the whole thing in place. However, this could require the need to file down the neighboring teeth to make room for the bridge, and this reduction in enamel is irreversible.

While both of these treatments are quicker to achieve in comparison, they also only lie on the surface of the smile. Dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone and trigger the osseointegration and regeneration effect. Dentures and dental bridges do not.

Candidates for Dental Implants

Qualifying for dental implants is as simple as consulting with Dr Pickup, Dr Bagshaw, Dr Hong or Dr. Thomas. Some traits that may be looked for in good candidates are:

  • Missing one or more teeth
  • Generally good oral health (no rampant tooth decay, periodontal disease, etc)
  • Sufficient jawbone support (if depleted, a bone graft may be recommended to replenish the area)
  • An understanding of the dental implant process
